Spain’s Bardenas Reales Looks Like the American Southwest

If you travel to the Navarre region in northern Spain, you expect to see green hills and lush vineyards. But just a short drive from the Pyrenees, the landscape completely changes.

You suddenly find yourself in the middle of a barren desert. This is Bardenas Reales. It is a massive stretch of dry dirt, deep canyons, and weirdly shaped rock towers. It looks like a piece of the American Southwest dropped right into the middle of Europe.

Carved By Water And Wind

Millions of years ago, this whole area was a giant basin. Rivers dumped heavy amounts of mud, clay, and sandstone here over a long period. Eventually, the water dried up, leaving all that packed dirt behind.

Then, the weather took over. The dirt here is mostly soft clay and chalk. That means it washes away very easily. When it rains in this region, it pours all at once. Heavy water rushes across the flat ground, carving deep ravines and washing away the soft dirt.

But some spots have a thick layer of hard sandstone or limestone sitting on top. That hard rock acts like an umbrella. It protects the soft clay underneath from the rain. This leaves tall, thin towers of dirt standing all by themselves. The most famous one is Castildetierra. It looks like a giant dirt chimney with a flat rock balancing right at the top.

Extreme Weather Swings

The summers get so hot that the ground cracks wide open. In winter, cold winds whip across the open land. Year after year, the weather keeps reshaping everything you see.

With almost no trees or bushes to break the gusts, loose dirt is swept up and carried away. These harsh conditions make survival difficult for plants and animals, leaving the region stark and empty.

A Famous Filming Location

Because the landscape looks so dry and alien, film crews use it constantly. If you watch movies or television shows, you have probably seen Bardenas Reales without even realizing it. They filmed major scenes for Game of Thrones right out in the dirt plains, using it as a stand-in for a fantasy continent.

It is a strange place because it is so temporary. The wind and rain are still tearing the clay towers down every single year. Eventually, even the famous Castildetierra tower will be completely washed away. But for now, it is one of the only true deserts you can explore in Europe.
