Leather is naturally flat and smooth. But makers can carve deep, detailed pictures right into the surface. It is not like carving wood, where you remove material. You just push the leather around.

The videos above show how the flat cowhide is physically cut and stamped to create depth.

Wetting The Leather

You cannot tool dry leather. It is too stiff. The maker rubs water into the surface with a sponge. This is called casing. The water soaks into the fibers, softening them.

The maker waits until the leather starts to return to its natural color. If it is too wet, it turns to mush. If it is too dry, the tools will not leave a mark.

Cutting The Lines

First, they cut the outline of the design. They use a small blade called a swivel knife. The maker rests their finger in a curved cradle on top of the knife.

They drag the blade toward them, cutting halfway through the thick leather. The barrel of the knife spins. This lets them cut smooth curves without lifting their hand.

Smashing The Background

This is how the design pops out. The maker uses metal stamps and a heavy mallet. They place a textured stamp on the outside edge of the cut lines. Then they hit it hard.

This smashes the background leather down flat. The leather inside the cut lines stays raised. And that is why it matters. The maker is not adding any material. They are just compressing the background so the main design stands out.
