Whether you brought home a puppy for National Puppy Day or you simply celebrated with the furry friend you have at home, keeping your fur baby happy and healthy will always be at the forefront of your mind. And one way to keep your pup healthy is to ensure that all of the plant babies in your home are also safe for your fur babies. Here are some of the best pet-friendly houseplants that are perfect even for those months of puppy training.

Rattlesnake Plant Pet-Safe Plants

1) Rattlesnake Plant

In addition to having an easy watering schedule and distinct leaves, the Rattlesnake Plant is also pet-safe for cats and dogs. Also called the Calathea lancifola, these plants will thrive in a low-light living room. They also grow best in loose, fast-draining soil that is fertilized monthly. The ideal temperature for this plant to grow is around 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Give your Rattlesnake Plant a watering when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch and give the leaves a spritz of water if they’re ever looking dry.

Spider Plant Pet-Friendly Plants

2) Spider Plant

We know what you’re thinking, these plant names aren’t sounding very pet-friendly. But trust us, the Spider Plant is as cuddly as your furry little friend. The Spider Plant or Chlorophytum is not only easy to grow indoors and very resilient, but it’s also a great air purifier and will help get rid of your home’s toxins. These leafy plant babies do best when avoiding direct sunlight as it will scorch their leaves. Although they can tolerate low light conditions, keeping your Spider Plant in indoor bright light with a temperature between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit will allow it to fully flourish.

African Violet Pet-Safe National Puppy Day

3) African Violet

African Violets (Saintpaulia) are one of the most popular houseplants due to their ability to bloom in low light, but they’re also safe around your fur babies. They thrive in the same environmental conditions that people and pets alike enjoy: moderate temperatures with average humidity. When they’re babies these plants thrive in 73-77 degree temperatures, but that can be reduced to as low as 68 degrees in adulthood. According to The Spruce, a soil-free potting mix and a balanced fertilizer are best for African Violet heath.

Orchid Plant Tabletop Pet-Friendly

4) Orchid

A classically beautiful and elegant plant, the orchid is also a pet-friendly houseplant for cats and dogs. Many Orchids (Orchidaceae) are even able to bloom for weeks during the winter months as they thrive in partial light and root-bound conditions. They typically need to be watered once per week during the winter months and twice a week during the hotter months, making them a fairly low maintenance addition to your home (unlike your puppy, but you love them anyway).

Friendship Plant Pilea Involucrata Leaves Pet-Safe

5) Friendship Plant

The sweetly named Friendship Plant (Pilea involucrata) is a houseplant that sports soft and intricately patterned leaves that are also pet-friendly. It typically grows 6-12 inches and, although it can survive in low light, it will need to get a few hours of sunlight each day. A Friendship Plant will thrive best in moderate to bright indirect sunlight with temperatures ranging between 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit. The soil will need to be allotted time to dry out slightly between waterings, but it should be watered thoroughly. And your efforts will be rewarded when your Friendship Plant sprouts some pale pink flower buds.
