Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center is Maryland’s only nuclear power plant and largest source of clean energy. An agreement between Constellation and Amazon will make it larger and more powerful. This agreement will stretch for 20 years.
The plan includes major upgrades for the 1,790-megawatt facility, including 90 megawatts of new, emissions-free power added between 2030 and 2032. In total, the agreement covers 690 megawatts of power.
Nuclear Energy For Another 20 Years

Significantly, this partnership gives Constellation the financial backing to relicense the plant for another 20 years. Additionally, it sets the stage for building new clean energy power plants at the site. For Amazon, the deal helps manage energy costs for its operations across the 13-state PJM regional grid.

Electricity from Calvert Cliffs will continue to supply power to the grid for everyone as it does today.
“This agreement demonstrates how private investment can strengthen critical energy infrastructure,” said Joe Dominguez, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation. “Amazon’s commitment supports the long-term operation of Calvert Cliffs for generations to come and creates a strong foundation for future investment in both the facility and in advanced nuclear technologies.”
Good News for the Local Area
Right now, the plant produces about 80% of Maryland’s clean energy, enough electricity to power more than 1.3 million homes. It also employs over 800 people and brings in about $21 million in taxes every year to support schools, roads, and other public services.
“Amazon is committed to investing in carbon-free energy to strengthen the grid and benefit the communities where we operate,” Kerry Person, vice president of AWS Global Operations and Data Center Delivery, explained. “This long-term agreement with Constellation sustains the continued operation and expansion of Maryland’s largest source of carbon-free energy, supports hundreds of jobs, and brings significant new generation to the regional grid.”
