Southeastern Arizona is mostly flat, dry desert. But if you drive toward the New Mexico border, a mountain range shoots straight up from the dirt. This is the Chiricahua National Monument. The hills are covered in thousands of tall gray rock columns. Some of them have massive boulders balancing perfectly on top, looking like they could fall over at any second.

A Violent Volcanic Eruption

This whole landscape started with a massive explosion. About 27 million years ago, a volcano called the Turkey Creek Caldera erupted nearby. It blew a huge amount of thick ash and pumice into the sky.

When all that superheated ash settled back down onto the ground, it was so hot that it actually melted together. It cooled and hardened into a thick layer of rock called rhyolite tuff. So instead of normal dirt or sandstone, the entire mountain range was covered in a massive, solid sheet of dark gray volcanic rock.

How Ice Carved The Columns

Once the rock cooled, the weather took over. As the ground shifted and settled over millions of years, the thick sheet of rhyolite cracked.

Water seeped straight into those vertical cracks. Up in the mountains, it gets cold at night. That water froze into ice, expanding and widening the cracks. When the ice melted during the day, the water sank deeper. This constant freezing and thawing slowly wedged the rock apart.

Rain and wind then washed away the loose debris. Because the rhyolite eroded along those straight vertical cracks, it left behind tall, thin columns of stone. Where the rock was slightly harder, heavy chunks stayed intact on top of thinner bases. This created the crazy balancing rocks that look impossible to stand on their own.

An Isolated Sky Island

The geology here is fascinating, but it also creates a unique environment for plants and animals. Biologists call the Chiricahua Mountains a sky island.

Because this mountain range rises so high above the surrounding desert, the climate totally changes as you go up. At the bottom, you have hot desert sand, cactus, and rattlesnakes. But up near the rock columns, the air is much cooler and wetter. You find thick pine forests, black bears, and rare birds that normally only live in Mexico or the Rocky Mountains.

The towering rocks trap moisture and create shade. This allows a high-altitude forest to survive in complete isolation from other woods. It is a weird mix of ancient volcanic destruction and rare wildlife all stacked into one remote mountain range.
