Wooden nutcrackers are a popular Christmas item. However, behind the make-believe uniforms, hats, and facial expressions lies a long tradition in this type of craftsmanship. In the Ore Mountains of Germany, there is still a tradition of making nutcrackers, passed down from generation to generation.
From Mining Towns to Christmas Decorations
The Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) were historically a mining area. With the closure of the mines, many townspeople began making Christmas decorations and wooden toys. Woodturning also became popular in towns like Seiffen. Many artisans created handmade nutcrackers in the town.

Wilhelm Friedrich Füchtner, a German artisan, created the first known nutcracker in 1870 from spruce. This nutcracker helped to create the classic design produced in the region. The Füchtner family has also continued to produce nutcrackers, drawing on eight generations of skills and techniques.
The earliest nutcrackers were often police officers, soldiers, or kings. All wore stern expressions that signified their status. Some nutcrackers also had a comedic touch. The large and imposing nutcrackers were often tasked with cracking hard nuts.
How Wooden Nutcrackers are Made
A classic nutcracker can require several different skills in its construction. Instead of creating the entire nutcracker from a single piece, it is often made from multiple components. These can include the body, head, arms, hat, and other features.
Many of these components can be made using a lathe. On a lathe, the wood is spun, and a cutting tool can be used to shape the piece. This technique is often used for creating the curved sides and rounded shapes of a nutcracker.

Other components may be cut, drilled, and sanded before being put together. Once these components are put together, the nutcracker starts to take shape.
The final stage is painting. The painting may include facial features, clothes, and decorative features. Natural wood finishes are also used for some nutcrackers, allowing the natural wood to be part of the design.
How Does a Nutcracker Work?
Classical nutcrackers were designed not just as Christmas decorations.
A nutcracker has a movable jaw that works via a lever located on the back of the nutcracker. A nut can be placed in the mouth, and with the use of the lever, the jaw can be used to crack the nut.

However, many contemporary nutcrackers are now created as Christmas decorations rather than nutcrackers. Using a nutcracker to crack nuts can also damage the nutcracker due to the painted and working components.
In Seiffen, however, artisans still produce nutcrackers using classical techniques. The nutcracker requires several skills, including woodturning, assembly, and painting, before it can be used as a Christmas decoration.
