LG Energy Solution just kicked off production at its brand-new, 226-acre facility in Lansing, Michigan. The company has poured over $2 billion into this site since 2022, and it marks a major step forward for battery manufacturing in North America.
Powering EVs and Energy Storage

The facility produces lithium-iron phosphate cells for energy storage systems. A division called LG Energy Solution Vertech takes these cells and integrates them into full systems for utilities, factories, and the power grid. Local power companies like DTE Energy will use these batteries to help keep electricity reliable as energy demands grow.
Additionally, the plant makes energy-dense nickel-manganese-cobalt cells for Toyota. These specific batteries will go straight into electric vehicles, including the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV built in Kentucky.
At full capacity, the site aims to produce more than 35 gigawatt-hours worth of batteries each year.
“Today marks a defining milestone for LG Energy Solution. Lansing will produce advanced batteries that support not only the future of mobility, but also America’s growing energy infrastructure and digital economy,” said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “We are strengthening America’s battery ecosystem, expanding our manufacturing footprint and reaffirming our long-term commitment to the United States.”

Big Moves for Michigan Jobs
Right now, about 900 people work at the Lansing location. However, as production ramps up, that number is expected to reach 1,700 team members.
By the end of 2026, LG Energy Solution plans to employ more than 3,300 people across the state, making it one of Michigan’s top 50 employers. The company has already invested over $5 billion in Michigan since 2010, with other facilities in Holland and Troy.
“The state’s skilled workforce is a great fit for our high impact industry, and we expect to continue our partnership with Michigan well into the 21st century,” said Dae-sik Choi, president of LG Energy Solution Michigan. “The jobs at this facility pay well, offer great benefits and require creativity and problem solving at all levels. Unlike many other high-tech industries, battery making creates jobs for everyone, from hourly workers to advanced degree holders.”
