The U.S. is seeking more power and reliable equipment. Hitachi Energy is stepping up with a $528 million investment to build a new transformer manufacturing factory in Mississippi. This is the company’s largest single investment in the United States. The new facility will also generate over 700 jobs.

The new plant is the centerpiece of a larger $1.5 billion expansion plan across the country. Between new data centers, electric industrial tech, and an aging power grid, electricity demand is rising… fast.

“Electricity demand is growing rapidly, and the grid must grow with it,” said Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO, Hitachi Energy. “This investment in Mississippi, our largest ever in the U.S., reflects our long-term commitment to American manufacturing and building the grid infrastructure that will help power America’s growth for decades to come.”

The new factory in Gallman, Mississippi, will be 6.5 miles from Hitachi Energy’s current plant in Crystal Springs.

According to the company, construction is scheduled to begin late this year. Transformer production is scheduled to begin in 2029. Once built, the site will be twice the size of the old plant and more than double its production capacity. Old operations will move to Gallman, but the Crystal Springs building will stay open for training and storage.

“This is truly a massive win for Mississippi and the United States. Hitachi Energy could’ve made its largest investment in America anywhere in the country – but the company chose Mississippi,” said Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves. “Mississippi’s momentum is growing stronger every day, and it is our people who are building the future of American energy infrastructure. This $528 million investment will create over 650 new jobs while expanding the domestic manufacturing capacity our country needs to meet growing demand. Mississippi is proud to play a leading role in powering America’s future.”

A Nationwide Push

Hitachi Energy is also spending $457 million in South Boston, Virginia, $106 million in Alamo, Tennessee, and $70 million in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, at the Mount Pleasant facility. Together, these expansions add up to over 1,600 new jobs.
