Sustainable fuel accounts for less than 1% of the 100 billion gallons of jet fuel that the aviation industry uses annually. American Airlines and Infinium used electro sustainable aviation fuel, or eSAF, for a commercial passenger flight.

The plane flew 391 miles from Corpus Christi to Dallas. This fuel is made from waste CO₂ and renewable electricity instead of petroleum or bio-based materials.

This eSAF was mixed with regular jet fuel at Infinium’s Texas plant. It meets current standards for aircraft engines, so planes don’t need any special parts to use it. It also cuts greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% over its lifecycle compared to standard jet fuel.

“Since 2023, we have been producing scalable, drop-in eDiesel and eNaphtha at our Pathfinder facility from waste carbon and renewable energy for use in commercial trucks and plastics processing,” Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle explained. “Adding eSAF to our product slate — and seeing it power a commercial passenger flight — marks another meaningful step forward in bringing practical, low-carbon fuel solutions to industry.”

Scaling SAF production at lower prices is essential to reducing emissions, strengthening our long-term competitiveness, and continuing to deliver the connectivity and economic benefits that our customers rely on.”

Right now, Infinium is building a facility called Project Roadrunner. When it opens in 2027, it should produce over 5 million gallons of eSAF each year.
