On Wednesday, September 10, a drone show in New York City recreated the Twin Towers in remembrance of 9/11.

The drone show was part of NYC’s  “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor,” a tribute to the 2,977 people killed in the September 11th terrorist attacks (World Trade Center: 2,753, Pentagon: 184, Shanksville, PA: 40 passengers and crew).

Thousands of drones lit up the New York City sky, forming a silhouette of the Twin Towers. Sky Elements Drone Show put together the art installation. “With thousands of drones, we put the towers back in the New York City skyline at the height and scale they held on September 11th, 2001,” the company website states. “It was built for the families first, for a generation with no memory of that day, and for a city reclaiming the sky above it as a place for hope, remembrance, and history.”

The 2,977 drones recreated a 1:1 scale of the North Tower (1 WTC) and the South Tower (2 WTC).

This memorial light show was seen all across the Big Apple, giving every resident a moment to reflect on a day where the nation stood still.

The installation was a collaborative effort from a collective of people from the 9/11 community, including Brenda Berkman (FDNY First Responder, Artist), Tim Brown (FDNY First Responder 1993 and 2001), Terry Strada (family of Tom Strada, President of 9/11 Families United), Jim Smith (family of NYPD Moira Smith), and Genevieve Siller (Daughter of Stephen Siller).

“I helped design 2,977 Lights to honor the innocent and our 343 FDNY heroes,” said Tim Brown. “I did it for my brothers Chris Blackwell of Rescue 3, Terry Hatton of Rescue 1, and Michael Lynch of Ladder 4. Three of the 2,977 lights are theirs.”
